Chien-Ming Wang Can’t Get It Done In Yankees Loss

by @ 4:00 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

The Yanks lost the rubber game in their three game series with the Red Sox 7-4 and it was Chien-Ming Wang who dropped his second straight start of the season.  He gave up four runs on six hits and three walks with strikeout in six innings.  Scott Proctor gave up a run as well and Sean Henn was tagged for two.

Alex Rodriguez didn’t go yard and he didn’t drive in a run but he went two for four to cap off a historic April.  Doug Mientkiewiecz and Derek Jeter both hit the ball over the fence though and Mientkiewiecz did it with two runners on.

So the Yankees start the new week in last place, but don’t expect it to last.  Next up is three against against the Rangers in Texas.  Phil Hughes get his second start in the opener on Tuesday in the opener.  The Rangers have struggled of late so hopefully they can use this series to get back on track.

Yankees End Skid

by @ 3:54 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

First off, the bad news.  Jeff Karstens was hit by a comebacker to leadoff hitter Julio Lugo and after a single by Kevin Youkilis, he was taken out of the game.  The good news is, Kei Igawa shut the Red Sox out through six innings and he picked up the win in a 3-1 Yankees win.  He walked four and struck out six.  Mariano Rivera finally picked up his first save with a shutout ninth.

Jorge Posada provided most of the offense with a two run homer.  He also scored on Melky Cabrera’s double and Derke Jeter finished with three hits in the game.

Chien-Ming Wang gets the start tomorrow in the rubber game.  It’s about time to put the Red Sox in their place.

Yankees Drop Seventh Straight Game

by @ 4:07 am. Filed under 2007 Season

Yawn.  Yeah, this is getting old, but look back at the last couple of years and see when the Yankees didn’t go through a stretch like this early.  And guess where they ended up folks??  Yeah, that’s right, they may not have made it to World Series but they made it into the dance.

Yawn again.  The Yankees lost their seventh straight.  Andy Pettitte was roughed up, Derek Jeter had three hits and Johnny Damon drove in two.  Revenge is today as the Yankees will take all of their frustrations out on Tim Wakefield.

Phil Hughes Hit Hard in Debut

by @ 6:40 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

Welcome to the show kid.  Phil Hughes took it on the chin today and lost his first career start to the Blue Jays.  He gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

Oh yeah, the awesome Yankee offense was shutout on four hits too.  Jason Giambi had two of those hits and Derek Jeter was out after getting beaned last night.  Hideki Matsui walked three times.

So not a lot to talk about, considering it’s the Yankees sixth straight loss.  This is really starting to piss me off and you wonder how long it’ll be until the Boss speaks out.  Hopefully he doesn’t wait too long.

And this weekend it’s three against Boston.  This would be the time to turn things around.

Chien-Ming Wang Loses Season Debut to Devil Rays

by @ 6:52 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

This losing streak is starting to suck.  Mike Myers gave up a grand slam to Carl Crawford that ended up being the difference in the Yankees 6-4 loss to the Rays.  Chien-Ming Wang took the loss, but he definitely had some help in this one.

Hideki Matsui homered, drove in two and scored twice in the loss.  A-Rod was hitless. Yeah, I know it’s hard to believe.  Almost as hard to believe as this five game losing streak.  Yeah, that’s the Yankees in last but don’t get to used to it.  What’s nice is, the Jays beat up the Red Sox so the total to get back on top is still what it was when we started the week.

Speaking of the Jays, they roll into town for two games.  A win, or two, would be nice.

Alex Rodriguez Hits Two Homeruns in Yankees Fourth Straight Loss

by @ 4:07 am. Filed under 2007 Season

Anytime now guys.  While A-Rod and the offense have done their job, the pitchers need to step up.  I found it interesting that now Philip Hughes is going to get his chance on Thursday.  At this point, I’ll try anything.

Alex Rodriguez, yawn, hit two more, yawn, homeruns.  He now has fourteen and I think that ties the record for April.  With about a week left, I see that record going down.  He also now has 34 RBIs and he’s hitting a nice, even .400.  Yeah, Albert Pujols may be the man, but A-Rod is showing him how it’s done in the American League.  Robinson Cano also went yard and Jason Giambi finished with three hits.  Plenty of offense in this one.

Then there’s the pitching.  Kei Igawa was roughed up for seven runs on eight hits and three walks in just 4 1/3 innings.  Brian Bruney gave up three and Mariano Rivera actually got his ERA down below eight with a shutout eighth inning.

The bad news here is that the Yankees now sit at 8-10 and if they lose today, even the Rays will pass them. Yes, I know it’s temporary and that the Yankees will be in first place, most likely by the break, but it’d be nice if they just won the games early and let us relax.

Yankees Drop Third Straight With Sweep at Boston

by @ 2:47 am. Filed under 2007 Season

Man, they’re probably happy in Boston this morning.  The Yankees dropped their third straight game at the hands of the Red Sox and we now sit four games back in third place.  Heck, even the Orioles are in front of us.   The Yanks have been there before and I’m confidant the end will be the same (i.e. playoffs), but it sure would be nice to do a wire to wire thing like we got used to in the late 90s instead of this come back from several games down stuff.

Anyway, Chase Wright was bombed in the the third inning and he gave up four homeruns in succession.  This would be a big deal but it just happened last year with the Dodgers  Anyway, the Yankees actually took the lead back until the Red Sox scored three in the seventh and that pretty much finished things up.

Scott Proctor gave up the three seventh inning runs and he took the loss.  Wright lasted only three innings and now the pen is going to be stretched.

Jason Giambi had a nice game and he drove in three runs on a double and a single.  Derek Jeter hit his first homerun of the season and Alex Rodriguez went one for four and he was hit by a pitch and he scored twice.

Just what the doctor ordered, we get two against Tampa Bay.  If we drop either one of these, I’ll be bummed although tomorrow’s matchup could go either way with Scott Kazmir throwing against Chien-Ming Wang in his first start of the start.  Let’s just hope the boys bring their bats.

Yankees Lose Again in Boston

by @ 5:36 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

I’ve said this quite often, but I hate playing in the shit box.  Most of the time, bad things happen there.  Yeah, I know there was the five game sweep last year, but if you play out that series 99 more times, in none of them do you get a five game sweep in Boston.  Anyway, today’s loss was just a beatdown. No ninth inning heroics by anyone.  The Red Sox just outpunched us.

Jeff Karstens was really pummelled.  He gave up all seven runs on nine hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings.  The pen threw pretty well from there but the deficit was just a touch too much as the Yankees could only pull it to 7-5.

Derek Jeter had two hits and two runs while Alex Rodriguez racked up two more hits and one more RBI.  The loss pushed the Yankees back to .500 at 8-8 and we now trail the Red Sox by three games.  Hardly insurmountable especially this early but tomorrow’s game is a pretty big one.  And it’s a battle of rookies as Dice-K will throw against Chase Wright.  Hopefully this Wright kid can get it going and pull this one out and the Yanks can pound Dice-K in the process.  The over/under for homeruns by A-Rod is two.

Yankees Lose Ugly

by @ 6:36 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

Now this was a kick in the you know what.  The Yankees were just cruising.  Alex Rodriguez hit two more homeruns and the Yankees had a nice, comfortable 6-2 lead.  Then similar to what the Yanks did to the Indians yesterday, things just turned around all at once.

Double, walk, ground out, single.  Now it’s 6-3 and Mariano Rivera is brought in to stop the damage right?  You wonder if something is wrong with Rivera because he gives up single, triple, single before Alex Cora is caught stealing for the second out.  By this time, the Red Sox have the lead.  Rivera strikes out Julio Lugo but by this time, the damage has already been done.

I hate giving the Red Sox hope too, especially when they’re playing in the shit box.  And it’s Jeff Karstans versus Josh Beckett tomorrow and that doesn’t give me a warm fuzzy feeling. And what can you say about A-Rod.  Only two other players have ever had 12 homers and 30 RBIs in April and A-Rod has done it with nine games left in the month.  I’d say he deserves a day off, but all he does is walk around the bases.

Alex Rodriguez Hits Homerun Number Ten In Yankees Come From Behind Win

by @ 3:02 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

Now this is what’s it about.  The Yankees turned a 6-2 deficit into an 8-6 win by blasting the Indians so called closer.  Josh Phelps started the inning off with a solo homerun and then the hero, Alex Rodriguez, hit a walk off three run shot to win it.  The homerun was his tenth of the season.  All if a days work for A-Rod.  Bobby Abreu had a nice game and he went four for five with two RBIs and a run and Jason Giambi also went yard.

Sean Henn picked up the win in relief.  It was his first career win.  Darrell Rasner threw only 4 1/3 innings but it wasn’t all bad.  He gave up one run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The Yankees sit just one back of the Red Sox and two square off in a huge three game series at the shit box.  I don’t particularly care for the pitching matchups but that’s what happens when you have a guy who was throwing in Double A last week in your rotation.  I still say Yanks win two of three and they score 30 runs doing it.

Alex Rodriguez Homers Again in Win Over Indians

by @ 6:07 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

Alex Rodriguez is getting kind of boring.  Homeruns every day, and all of those RBIs.  I mean c’mon, mix it up.  Belt a triple now and then or something.  And he’s only scored 16 times versus the 23 RBIs.  He needs to score more.  And maybe steal a base or two, which he can’t do if he’s trotting around the bases.  Or maybe he should start bunting for his hits, just to make it fair.

Hah, A-Rod is on a tear.  He belted his ninth homerun tonight in a 9-2 win over the Indians.  Derek Jeter finished with three hits and two runs and Jason Giambi went yard for the third time this season.

Kei Igawa picked up his MLB win with a solid outing.  He held the Indians to two runs on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts in six innings of work.  Then three relievers held the Indians hitless in the final three frames.

Tomorrow, Darrell Rasner will try to follow up on a solid start last week to finish off the Indians in their three game series.  The Yankees will get to dismantle Fausto Carmona as the Yankees will hopefully finish up the sweep.

Alex Rodriguez Hits Eighth Homerun in Yankees Blowout Win

by @ 3:06 am. Filed under 2007 Season

Alex Rodriguez continued his awesome hitting display with another big game yesterday as the Yankees took down the Indians 10-3.  A-Rod went two for five with his eighth homerun and he now has 21 RBIs already this season.  Jorge Posada also went yard and he drove in three runs while Johnny Damon reached base three times and scored two runs.

Chase Wright picked up a win in his first career start in a fair outing.  He gave up three runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in five innings.   Then three relievers combined to shut down the Indians the rest of the way.

Kei Igawa will be throwing for his first win of his major league career tonight help making him worth his cash advance.  Jeremy Sowers will be the next Yankees vicitim.  I see another ten run game coming.

Mariano Rivera Blows Save in Yankees Loss

by @ 4:22 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

First off, a little pat on the back.  The Yankees called up Chase Wright to take over in the rotation with both Carl Pavano and Mike Mussina hitting the disabled list.  Of course you would have been up on this had you read this very blog back on Thursday because I mentioned Chase Wright back then.

Anyway, back to the present.  The Yankees had a 4-2 lead going into the ninth and Mr. automatic, Mariano Rivera, gave up a three run bomb to Marco Scutaro of all people.  A nice start by Andy Pettitte went to waste and the Yankees once again slipped a game below .500.

Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada were the hitting stars.  They both went two for four with a run and an RBI.

Next up is a tough Indians team.  The Yankees do have the day off tomorrow so hopefully the day off will do everyone some good because it’s time to get back on track.

Yankees Come From Behind, Win in Thirteen

by @ 5:03 am. Filed under 2007 Season

Jason Giambi hit a solo homerun in the top of the thirteenth last night to cap of a come back from a 3-0 deficit.  Alex Rodriguez got the scoring going with a solo homerun in the fifth (his seventh of the season) and Melky Cabrera singled home Robinson Cano to make it 3-2.  Then Robinson Cano scored another run in the seventh when he came around on Jorge Posada’s double.  Nobody scored in the next five innings and then Giambi did his thing in the thirteenth as the Yankees won it 4-3.  Cano finished the game three for four with two walks.

Darrell Rasner gave up three unearned runs in his start and he actually made it into the sixth inning.  Brian Bruney pitched the final two frames and he picked up the win.

So the Yankees are back up to .500 and they’re a game back of Boston.  The rubber game is this afternoon and it’s a fun pitching match up as Andy Pettitte goes up against Rich Harden.

Yankees Blow Lead, Lose to Athletics In Eleven

by @ 4:33 am. Filed under 2007 Season

I have a feeling it’s going to be like this all season.  Sometimes, the pitching will come through and the bats do their jobs.  Other times, the pitching won’t be there but the Yanks will score ten and still pick up the win.  Then there’s a game like last night where the hitting is only okay and the pitching blows the game.

The Yankees had a nice 4-1 lead and they let it slip.  Kei Igawa did most of the damage when he gave up two runs in the sixth but then Kyle Farnsworth was knocked around again and he gave up the tying run.  The pitching caught a groove for a while but Brian Brunley was eventually tagged for the game winner in the eleventh.

Bobby Abreu had a nice game at the plate.  He went two for four with a run and an RBI.  Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi also picked up two hits.

Darrell Rasner gets the start tonight and the Yanks will face off against Joe Blanton.  Hopefully Rasner will make up for his poor start last time around.

Yankees Shut Down in Loss to Twins

by @ 4:59 am. Filed under 2007 Season

One run on five hits??  Against Ramon friggin Ortiz??  What’s going on here?  Anyway, A-Rod drove in the only run of the gameo on sac. fly and Johnny Damon had two hits and a run.

On the mound, Mike Mussina pulled himself out of the game in the third inning because of an injured hamstring.  Sean Henn gave up a run (that came off of Scott Proctor once he left the game) and Kyle Farnsworth was hammered for four runs and he took the loss.

The Yankees have the day off today and then they shoot over to Oakland for a three game series against the A’s.  The Yankees pitching staff is falling fast and it might be time to bring up Philip Hughes before things really start falling apart.  Or they could take a look at this Chase Wright kid who’s gotten off to a nice start at Trenton.

Alex Rodriguez Hits Sixth Homerun in Another Yankees Win

by @ 2:39 am. Filed under 2007 Season

The Yankees kicked around the Twins again and once again, it was Alex Rodriguez who led the way.  He hit his sixth homerun of the season and he drove in two more to bring his season total up to 15.  Johnny Damon drove in three runs and also homered while Derek Jeter scored three times in the 10-1 win.

Even better, the Yankees got another good outing from their starter.  Andy Pettitte threw six shutout innings to pick up the win and Mariano Rivera pitched another scoreless ninth.

Mike Mussina gets the start tonight as the Yanks go for the sweep.  They’re now in a three way tie for first with the usual suspects (Jays, Red Sox).  It sure would be nice for New York to seperate themselves from that pack.

1977 Yankees Diary

by @ 6:41 pm. Filed under Yankees History

In case you missed it, the first of four historical Yankees diaries started earlier this week with the 1977 Yankees kicking off at Yankees History.  Basically you get a quick hit of what happened that day.  Coming in the next couple of weeks will be the 1927, 1937 and 1947 Yankees.

Alex Rodriguez Homers Again in Yankees Win

by @ 2:42 am. Filed under 2007 Season

It’s all about A-Rod these days and his past transgressions have drifted away.  At least for the time being.  He went yard again yesterday with a two run shot and he’s now the first Yankee ever to homer five times in the first six games.  The top of the lineup really got it done in this game though.  Johnny Damon, Derek Jeter and Bobby Abreu combined for eight hits and Abreu homered and drove in four runs.

And lets not forget about the pitching.  Carl Pavano became the first Yankee starter to go at least five innings.  Even better, he went seven and gave up just two runs on six hits.

Andy Pettitte gets the start tonight and he’ll face Boof Bonser.  I love that name.

Alex Rodriguez Hot, Starting Pitching Not

by @ 11:40 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

Alright, the Yanks lost a series to the Orioles and our pitching has been downright horrible.  The fact that the Yanks are 2-3 is testament to their great offense and Alex Rodriguez is leading the way.  Whether he’s playing for a contract or not, he has four homeruns and eleven RBIs in the first five games.  Thats’s a solid clip.

Darrell Rasner joined the rest of the starters by not going five innings.  He almost made it though but he was knocked around for five runs on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.  Andy Pettitte actually came in and threw an inning of relief (not too bad either) but the pen could have no-hit the Orioles and it wouldn’t have mattered in the 6-4 loss.

The Yankees hit the road and they’ll take on the Twins, minus Johan Santana who threw in yesterdays game.  Maybe Carl Pavano can actually make it through five innings.  Then again, maybe not.

Alex Rodriguez’s Walk Off Grand Slam Caps Off Huge Yankees Comeback

by @ 4:49 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

Now this is what it’s all about.  The Orioles led the game 7-3 heading into the eighth and Jason Giambi made it a one run game with a three run shot.  Then in the bottom of the ninth, Alex Rodriguez came up huge with a walk off grand slam to end it Bronx style.

A-Rod finished the game with two dingers, four runs and six RBIs.  I’d consider that a monster game.

On the pitching side of things, Kei Igawa was welcomed to the major leagues with a beat down. He gave up seven runs on eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts in five innings of work.  Mariano Rivera ended up with the win because he threw a shutout ninth.

Darrell Rasner gets the start for the Yanks tomorrow.  He’ll face Orioles’ ace Erik Bedard in the rubber game.

April 6, 2007

Mike Mussina Hit Hard in Loss to Yankees

by @ 6:43 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

Six runs in four innings isn’t going to cut it.  Maybe we can blame it on the cold but this losing record stuff isn’t going to cut it. My prediction is, the Yanks win it tomorrow and never dip below .500 again.

Anyway, Mussina was shelled.  He gave up six runs on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts in four innings.  Give some props to the pen because they kept the Yankees in the game.  Particularly Sean Henn who held the Orioles to three scoreless innings.

At the plate, Robinson Cano had two hits and two RBIs.  Derek Jeter also had a solid game and he went two for five with a run.

Kei Igawa makes his major league debut.  Hopefully he’ll right the ship here and get the Yanks back on track.

Yankees Rack Up Fourteen Hits But Still Lose to Rays

by @ 7:13 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

Hopefully we get more from Andy Pettitte then this after what we’re paying him.  While he didn’t get a decision, he did give up four runs.  Yeah, two of those were unearned but he didn’t really pitch well.  He lasted just four innings and he gave up six hits and three walks.  Luis Vizcaino ended up taking the loss when he gave up a lone run in the eighth.  He’s gotten the decision in both of the Yankees games so far.

Robinson Cano had three hits and a run while Hideki Matsui had two hits, two RBis and a run.  The Yankees stranded ten though and A-Rod stranded six batters himself.

So the Yanks take their 1-1 record and they’ll play the Orioles at Yankee Stadium.  Mike Mussina makes his season debut tomorrow.

Alex Rodriguez, Jason Giambi Lead Yankees in Win Over Devil Rays

by @ 12:38 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

Win number one.  Mark it down because the Yankees did a number on the Devil Rays despite their ace being on the mound.  Alex Rodriguez homered, drove in two and scored twice while Jason Giambi drove in three.  Jorge Posada went yard and Bobby Abreu scored twice.  There was plenty of offense to go around in this one.

Carl Pavano was doing just fine until the fifth inning when the Rays scored five and actually took the lead.  Give some credit to the pen though because through 4 2/3 innings, five different relievers shut out the Devil Rays on three hits.  Mariano Rivera was particularly awesome when he struck out the side in the ninth.

Tomorrow, the Yanks have the day off and then it’ll be Andy Pettitte on Wednesday.  It should be win number two of about 110 wins this year.
