A Biased Look at the New York Yankees, the Greatest Franchise in the History of Sports
[powered by WordPress.]
Eric Mirlis, who writes for TheMirl.com, recently talked about how the Mets newly acquired closer, Billy Wagner, comes out of the pen to the same music as Mariano Rivera. While you can fault Wagner’s taste in his music, he is the new guy in town and should defer to Rivera, the future Hall of Famer.
Which means we have to come up with a new song for Wagner. My idea would be that he comes out to “I Love Trash” by Oscar the Grouch of Sesame Street since that’s what he’ll feel like after the Yankees lineup shells him in interleague play.

This is shocking—I had no idea Wagner used Mo’s music—not
that Mo even picked the ‘Sandman’ thing–I don’t think he had
even heard of it–it was someone else’s idea. But, Wagner must’ve known the tune was taken even when he started using it.
Why doesn’t he just use “Who Let the Dogs Out?” Actually, I
like that song–why doesn’t he use something like “Greensleeves.”

Doesn’t matter. With the starting pitching the Meta have, they will be out of it by the 5th inning. No need for a closer.

Wow…stupid comments from Skanks fans. Shocking…SHOCKING I tell you.

Well who had the music first. I was reading about it, and Wagner used to enter to “The FIreman”, but his teammate, Bagwell, didn;t like it and made him change it to “Enter Sandman”. I also read that he has had this entry music for a decade. So who had it first Rivera or Wagner. Is it just a coincidnece or did someone doing a little copying.
April 4th, 2006 at 6:13 am
Wagner started using it before Mariano, in 96, I believe.

Mike said “Doesn’t matter. With the starting pitching the Meta have, they will be out of it by the 5th inning. No need for a closer.”
The mets had to trade two of their starters because they had too many starters, unlike your wonderful starters in the Bronx. Who’s your 3rd, 4th, and 5th starters??? Are they going to use waivers every week again to find some starters? What happened to Moose? Hasn’t done much since coming over from Baltimore? The mets have starters and bullpen. I guess the Yankees will be bringing Mariano in by the 5th inning this year. Too bad you can’t play that high powered Oakland lineup every day.
As for Enter Sandman, Mariano can’t even understand the words to the song. He should be coming in to Menudo. Billy’s been using the song since 1996, when Mariano was a setup man to John Wettelend. I’m sure 75% of you band wagon fans never heard of John Wettelend. Sorry Yankee fans, get used to it, the original Sandman is putting hitters sleep in Queens.
April 4th, 2006 at 9:23 am
wagner used enter sandman before rivera did. rivera didn’t use it until some time after he was anointed closer, which happened in ‘97. i say, what’s the big freakin deal? just let the both of ‘em use the song!
April 4th, 2006 at 9:49 am
Here’s what you Mets fans don’t get. Wagner used Enter Sandman in Houston (shit hole) and Philadelphia (bigger shit hole). Mo’s been using it in New York. Wagner’s the new guy in town, so he’s the one who’s copying.
April 4th, 2006 at 10:04 am
perhpas that name is considered sacred and a song isnt but he is the greatest closer ever and the sone is his. are you going to nickname delgado the great bambino. he is as loyal to his song as the last 3 teams
he played for and he is an idiot. perhpas hell be sleeping with his wife in the parking laot soon.
April 4th, 2006 at 10:26 am
Nick, what you don’t get is that Wagner used it before Rivera and i don’t think he should change it just because rivera used it in ny longer than wagner. besides, the bronx is the biggest shithole.
April 4th, 2006 at 12:21 pm
Poor, poor Yankee fans:
Looooooooong before Mo there was Wagner and “Enter Sandman” - period.
April 4th, 2006 at 3:16 pm
It really does not matter. The Yankees will have a good pitching staff. Maybe not as good as years before but definitely good enough. With a lineup that WILL SCORE over 1,000 runs this year, a 3.0 ERA average will not matter. We will still win…IT ALL!
April 4th, 2006 at 3:19 pm
Forget about who had it first. They can both use it in my book. The only difference will be that Mariano will be the only one putting anyone to sleep… PERIOD
April 4th, 2006 at 3:39 pm
I would like to repeat, Wagner used it years before Rivera. New closer, new team running thecity
April 4th, 2006 at 3:45 pm
to the idiot who made the crack about Wagner sleeping with his wife in the parking lot……Does Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich ring a bell?
April 4th, 2006 at 4:12 pm
this song is a part of New York, and the Yankees. To come new to this city and use the same song one of the best relief pitchers ever, if not the best. It doesn’t even matter how long Wagner used it, he is new to the city, he can accomodate. Besides the Mets want their own identity, why do something the yankees have been doing for 10+ years across the river? It’s just LAME. Get a new song Wagner.
April 4th, 2006 at 6:00 pm
Looooooooong before Mo? Try about a year, and im not gonna say stuff like the mets pitching sucks so no need for a closer, but Mo Rivera is Mo Rivera, future first ballot hall of famer, Wagner is good, but hes not Mo. And Tony, Yankees have seven starters, Johnson, Mussina, Chacon, Small, Wang, Pavano, and Wright, injuries might hurt them a bit, but they the offense to battle through that, thats what they did last year.
April 5th, 2006 at 4:37 am
It’s embarassing. Obviously Wagner should pick a different song. The owner of the Mets should demand it. Doesn’t matter how long he used it. Can’t use it in NY. If he continues to use it, it will just be that much more embarassing.
April 5th, 2006 at 5:37 am
Wagner used Sandman in 1996. Rivera didn’t start using it until 1999.
Who’s copying whom now?
April 5th, 2006 at 12:15 pm
Wagner was using the song before Rivera, Mariano has said he doesn’t even like the song and that he doesn’t listen to that type of music, he listens to Christian music. So the song that is so inseperable from him is one he doesn’t like and is the complete opposite of who he is.
The manager for Metallica is a Mets season ticket holder and has said he loves that Wagner is using it at Shea.
April 5th, 2006 at 3:03 pm
I don’t care if he comes into music from The Nutcraker as long as he gets batters out. If Yankee fans donm’t want to hear it tell them to stay the hell out of Shea.
April 6th, 2006 at 3:55 am
how many rings has wagner helped his team win? he should show some
class (and due humility), and use another song. after last nights
blown save, i suggest “The Lonesome Loser”.
April 6th, 2006 at 12:26 pm
Who really cares who uses the song. Everyone knows Mariano is the best closer in baseball,
possibly the best ever. Wagner is good, but not comparable to Rivera. And also everyone knows
at the end of the season the Yankees will be in 1st place and the Mets might finish 3rd, at
best. Mo will be listening to Enter Sandman in October over the speakers at Yankee Stadium,
while Wagner will be home listening to it on his IPOD Nano.
April 6th, 2006 at 12:29 pm
all i have to say is that billy wagner is a picee of shit they should see who has more rings and that person gets to keep the fuckin song. fuck that fuckin guy
April 6th, 2006 at 12:31 pm
yeah timmy o i agree 100% i hope nilly wagner changes his fuckin song if not then i hope he comes out to nothing and when he comed to the bronx they should all boo his pussy ass till he fuckin changes it
April 6th, 2006 at 12:33 pm
they wont let me curse over here but i hope billy wagner realizes that he is a second teir closer in new your we already have the best of all time
April 8th, 2006 at 9:10 am
1,000 runs? The scored 15 the first game and 8 since then. Your pitching staff is attrocious. Rivera will be starting games pretty soon. They can play Enter Sandman during his pre-game warmup.
If Houston is a sh*thole, and Philly is a sh*thole, then what does that make the Bronx? The biggest sh*thole on the face of the earth.
I’m sure Wagner gives a f*ck about Yankee fans booing him. Metallica’s manager is a die hard Met fan. He should tell the Yankees that they can’t use the song anymore. Mariano said he would rather come out to Christian music. Let him change it then. Maybe “Jesus Take the Wheel”? That should be the Yankee’s theme song. They need Jesus to take the wheel and management of this team.
May 19th, 2006 at 6:41 pm
Who’s Mr. Sandman???? Let’s see, Wagner K’s the side, Mariano gets plowed. Oh Yeah!!!!
July 26th, 2006 at 7:39 pm
wagner is garbage, mo is god, and billy can listen to whatever he wants but he will never be compared to mo except in the theme song he enters to. whats wagners postseason ERA - 9 and a half. how many postseason saves does he have - 0. whats riveras playoff stats? 0.81 and 34 saves. hmmmmmm

Yankees fans are so absurd and funny. It’s almost cute, how they can live life so oblivious that theirs world is not the center of the world.
First off, who was it that pitched a no-no against the Yankees, the first since ‘54, in Yankee Stadium, of all places? Oh, it was the Astros. Who finished that no-no…BILLY WAGNER.
It’s laughable to any baseball fan not living in NY to even suggest that Rivera is the best relief pitcher of all time. He’s not even top 5. While Wagner isn’t either, they’re in the same category–great closers, each has been the best closer in at least one individual year. Both have won the Rolaids Relief award. Rivera’s pitched more in the playoffs, but that’s a ridiculous measure of superiority for a closer (as if Wagner could have personally launched his team into the playoffs, or as if the Astros with Rivera would have gone farther in the plyoffs!).
Still, their stats do show a few interesting things. Essentially equal ERA’s, but Wagner’s strikeout pace is much higher. Wags 11.96 vs. Rivera’s 7.99. Wagner is also possibly the hardest throwing pitcher of all time (clocked at 103 in Arizona–on a night when RJ topped out at 97 on the same gun). Wagner also holds the all-time record for strikeouts by a relief pitcher (in a single season) and strikeouts per 9IP for a season, and career.
Wagner struck out a ridiculous 14.95 per 9IP in ‘99. For comparison, Mo had 6.78 in what was a pretty good season for him.
Bottom line: Mo will be remembered as being on a good team, and having the good fortune to pitch on the postseason stage, and doing a good job with it. Wagner will be remembered as probably the best lefty closer of all time, and perhaps the hardest throwing pitcher of his age, and the best, most efficient strikeout pitcher of all time.
Oh, and Wags used the song before the Jesus-music loving Rivera, by 3 years. For reference, see this article:
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/story/406146p-343920c.html
Wags will also be remembered as the last pitcher to no-no the Yankees, and the first to do it since ‘54.

One final thought…
Yankees fans are pathetic. Wagner started using the song 3 years before Rivera had even heard the song. In fact, Wagner picked the song, since he is a Metallica fan. Rivera had the song picked for him by Yankees personnel because it solicited the best crowd response of the test group of songs they tried (after seeing the SD crowd react to Hoffman’s entry AC/DC tune). Doesn’t that seem poetic–Yankees music picked to maximize crowd response / profit. Ridiculous that Yankees fans (for whom the world revolves around their own ego) think Wagner should pick a different song because THEY heard it played when Rivera entered a game first–nevermind the fact that Wagner entered to it, knows the band’s music, and picked the song (when Rivera didn’t) 3 YEARS BEFORE. Perhaps Wagner should apologize for making his MLB debut in a city that’s not New York. How absurd. For factual reference, see this article:

If u hate the Yankees so much become Red Sox fans and leave us all alone
Who’s the Sandman, well look at the ring and you’ll know the answer, and if someone wants to bring up 04 well then I’ll just talk about 2003, 2000, 1999, 1998 most total wins including playoffs ever, 1996 and so many more years that they don’t even fit on the page
